Kurt Vile’s newest solo album, B’lieve I’m Going Down, is different to say the least. Kurt himself describes it as “All over the place “, and he is completely right. From Pretty Pimpin’s twangy, singer – songwriter style to Lost My Head There’s piano and synth driven sway, this album has a little something for everyone. While individual songs can vary from each other a good deal, the album overall gives a very nostalgic feel. The slight drawl to Kurt’s voice creates an accent that is almost impossible to place, but lends a very western feel to the whole album. If a hitchhiker was playing this album on the side of the highway while waiting for the next truck to stop for him, it wouldn’t feel out of place at all, even more so with the banjo led I’m an Outlaw. Overall, this album is great to listen to while walking around town at night. However, if the sound of guitars and banjos brings up too many memories of Deliverance, then this album might not be for you.
(Side Note: For those familiar with the Youtube star Jeffery Dallas, Kurt’s voice sounds VERY similar to him, particularly in That’s Life, Tho (Almost Hate to Say). This may or may not be a good thing.)
