Music Co-Director

Music Co-Director, KVCU Radio 1190

Radio 1190, the student-run music and news radio/online station for the University of Colorado Boulder, is seeking a Music Co-Director. This position will work closely with the station’s second Music Co-Director to curate the overall musical sound of Radio 1190, as well as act as an integral part of recruiting and managing volunteers tasked with reviewing and adding new and classic college radio music to the station’s rotation.

Specifically, the Music Co-Directors are responsible for the following:

  • Curating, managing, programming, actively listening to, and improving the station’s “1190 Mixtape” automated music content that broadcasts when no live DJ is on air — including updating the station’s automation software (Zetta) weekly with new releases and rotation updates
  • Communicating with music labels and promoters to obtain relevant new releases to add to the 1190 Mixtape, as well as request station artifacts like artist “you’re listening to Radio 1190” IDs and (in conjunction with the station’s News Team and Promotions Director) interview opportunities and promo tickets
  • Reviewing all new music (physical and digital) submitted to the station for desirability and adherence to the station’s overall sound — an average of 40+ albums per week
  • Tracking all new selected music in detailed spreadsheets, including reporting charts to NACC every Tuesday morning — both Top Adds (10 best new albums of the week) and Top 30 (most played)
  • Maintaining a clean and organized cloud storage drive for storing and distributing new music to Mixtape Team members
  • Leading weekly Mixtape Team volunteer meetings, in which members “claim” albums/singles that make the Music Co-Directors’ initial cut, then screen for FCC adherence (e.g. no profanity), and return their favorite selected tracks for addition to the automation system
  • Creating monthly blog posts showcasing new adds to the station and Mixtape Team member album reviews
  • Working with volunteers and the station’s News Team to air Mixtape Team album reviews on our weekday Audio Magazine program
  • Posting 1190 Mixtape and Mixtape Team-related social media content to Radio 1190’s primary social channels, including weekly chart posts, meeting announcements, and monthly blog teasers

In addition to demonstrating the skills required to achieve the above key responsibilities, the ideal candidate will also demonstrate the following qualifications and qualities in their application:

  • Demonstrated experience in managing volunteers, including keeping meetings on task and ensuring volunteers submit items on time
  • Spreadsheet, cloud drive, and general software proficiency and adaptability
  • Self-starter with ability to work productively under little ongoing supervision
  • Ability to lead, guide, and motivate others
  • Close attention to deadline and detail

Both Music Co-Director roles report directly to Radio 1190’s General Manager, a non-student member of College of Communication, Media, Design and Information (CMDI) staff.

This position will work closely with the station’s general manager, volunteer director, and station volunteers to maintain and grow Radio 1190’s presence as a top-of-mind resource for our campus, Boulder, Denver, and global listening community.

  • Managing the station’s concert ticket giveaways — this includes soliciting ticket giveaways from promoters, managing social media and website giveaway entries, reaching out to winners, reporting winners to venues/promoters, and working to scale our overall ticket giveaway program.
  • Ensuring Radio 1190 is “tabling” at 6-8 Boulder/Denver concerts or similar events (First/Final Fridays, farmers markets, etc) per semester — this includes working with promoters and organizers to secure permission, being present at the events to hand out stickers/flyers and represent the station, and working with Radio 1190’s volunteer director to include station volunteers at these events.
  • Working with Radio 1190’s volunteer director to ensure our presence at all relevant CU Boulder campus recruitment/involvement events (including admitted students days, Be Involved Fair, etc) as well as any on-campus DJ bookings from departments, clubs, etc.
  • Social media promotion for all of the above — however, note that this is NOT purely a social media content position and the successful applicant will be expected to fulfill all of the above duties.
