If any experience really captured Boulder’s lively culture, it was Nether Hour’s concert at Fox Theater on Friday, Jan. 31. A 2018 rock band debut from Austin,Texas Bobby Flacos’ vocals, Adam Bercy’s bass and guitarist Bishop delivered a groovy mix of soft rock and funk, truly capturing the Boulder spirit.
The trio first played their number one song on Spotify, “The Hit,” before playing one of their lesser known songs, “Sex-Ed.” Thanks to Bishop’s lovely background vocals, it was a particularly memorable melody. The lyrics “it’s a little frustrating oh, baby // How long’s it gonna take you?” struck a chord with the crowd, who sang along to the last note.
Before the closing act, Bercy announced that “this song’s about love.” The song, called “Doo Da Dee Da,” was an electric guitar-driven medley, reminiscent of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” with a more relaxed rhythm and softer lyrics. By the final note, the crowd was swaying in a collective trance that naturally warranted an encore.
The last song they played, “Whiskey and Water” was a mellow yet funky flow about forlorn love. The songs softly straining vocals encapsulated the sound of yearning. This beautiful portrayal left me with appreciation for Boulder’s carefree spirit.
