Um, wow. Suddenly it’s finals season for the Spring 2025 semester, our spring program calendar is in its last few weeks, and we’ve almost got another academic year in the books at Radio 1190.
It’s not an exaggeration at all to say that this year has been our biggest one in a long time — maybe even in the history of the station! Just to name a few wins, we …
- Launched our new 92.9 FM translator in Denver, bringing our total listening area population to 3.5 million
- More than tripled our roster of live student music DJs to include 85+ live shows
- Doubled our student News Team and earned nearly 20 regional and national awards for multimedia journalism
- Installed a new automation system — the 1190 Mixtape — packed with student-curated new releases and messages from sponsors in our newly restarted underwriting program
- Added a “CU Boulder Block” of faculty and friend podcasts from a wide range of departments and subject areas, including The Cause, Looks Like New, Our Friend The Computer … and even more to come
- Welcomed a new partnership with CU Denver’s Lynx Radio to air their amazing Lynx Radio Hour showcase of local music every other Thursday during the academic year
- Held our first fund drive in nearly a decade (and sent out so many hand-silkscreened tote bags from our friends at Rooster Pie in Salida!)
- Restarted live on-site broadcasts from Boulder/Denver concert venues — including our Ambient Super Bowl and Program Council’s Battle of the Bands — as well as on-campus remotes and outreach for the Alumni Association, campus departments, and more
- Made big improvements to our website (including winning two national awards for it!)
- Welcomed a variety of local broadcast luminaries, alumni and friends into our studios for Q&As, reminisce sessions, and guest DJ appearances
- And more I probably can’t remember because, well, it’s finals season.
None of this could have happened without the enthusiasm, support, and dedication of our more than 150 student and community volunteers, including our amazing student managers — some of whom we get to wish congrats to (with a few tears in our eyes) as they graduate this spring/summer and move on to their next bright adventures. A big, big hand to news director Juanita Hurtado, program director Aiden Brolly, music co-director Jake Thompson, promotions director Jasmyn Chioda, and production and Local Shakedown director Luke Petet for keeping so many balls in the air this year (and making it look easy!) while leaving their mark on the station for years to come. We’ll miss you like crazy, but we’re so excited to see what you’ll be up to next.
As for this summer — we’ve got some exciting things in the works, including our new summer schedule with expanded DJ shows coming the week of May 19! Keep an eye out here and on our Instagram or Facebook to stay up to date. And as always, thanks for listening to your best friend on the airwaves! You’re why we do what we do. <3
Let’s do it all again next year,
