It’s a new year here at Radio 1190. Here are some albums we’ve been loving this winter, for you and everyone you know!
Babe City – I Love You Forever
“I Love You Forever lures you in with three back-to-back noisy, temperamental bangers before dropping a gorgeously produced twangy love song with Kiss Me Again. The rest of this album exists in the space in-between these two extremes, creating beautiful noise with poppy hooks and screaming emotion.” – Gavin
Ethel Cain – Perverts
“This was a really interesting album. It’s very different tonally from the rest of Ethel Cain’s previous work (although there might be a few glimpses here and there in Preacher’s Daughter), although a lot of her themes remain constant. Perverts has an ambient, eerie, anxiety-provoking sound – the majority of audible dialogue is deeper and harsh. This horrific sound does well to convey the darkness of the Church – a theme explored in past albums, but I think best exemplified in this one. The Church views sex and queerness as perversion, and this can be further distorted in one’s mind. This album captured the feeling of growing up queer in the Church perfectly – I felt the same discomfort, fear, and pain while listening. I do really love Cain’s vocals, which are not featured very prominently in this album, but when they are, their beauty juxtaposes the darker sound of the album well. This is quite the impressive project – Cain wrote, recorded, and produced this by herself. I hope to see future works from Cain similar to this album – I think it is incredibly well executed. I added the entire album because I didn’t think any songs warranted being cut.” – Emily
TDA – FUCK
“I really liked this album, it’s very angsty, and gives that classic punk sound that I love hearing at the local shows I see around town. GF From Hell is my favorite song, I can just imagine starting the circle pit during this song” – Jane
Saint Etienne – The Night
“Saint Etienne leans really hard into the alternative, ambient sound which has appeared briefly or in background in their previous albums. Super unique and an enjoyable listen.” – Rebecca
“This album is definitely something I would play in the evenings or late night to relax. Most tracks are ambient, and some songs like Alone Together, have a smooth jazz quality.” – Anna
drive your plow over the bones of the dead – tragedy as catharsis
“‘tragedy as catharsis’ is a very energetic and loud album. Most of the songs are short, so you get a burst of energy with each song. You will love this if you like melancholic songs filled with anguish and power.” – Anna
The High Lines – It All Comes Crashing Down
“Loved this! Super chill, got some really good hooks, and has emo elements! Favorite track was probably ‘Redwood’ but it was really hard to pick.” – Max
